Introduction

A deep plane facelift and neck lift is one of the most advanced techniques in aesthetic surgery. Unlike outdated or superficial methods, this procedure focuses on releasing facial ligaments in the deeper tissue layers. This allows the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) to be fully and naturally repositioned vertically.

Not only does this lift the neck, jawline, and the so-called ‘jowls,’ but it also restores volume loss in the midface. The emphasis is on repositioning the underlying structures rather than tightening the skin. As a result, the outcome appears more natural, with a gentler healing process due to minimal tension on the skin.

This technique corrects sagging facial volumes, addresses hanging cheeks and neck folds, and restores the youthful V- or heart-shape of the face. It also sharpens the definition of the jawline and neck.

The goal of this procedure is to restore youthful facial contours and reduce visible signs of aging. However, it does not stop the natural aging process entirely.

Depending on the individual's anatomy and desires, additional procedures may be considered, such as a brow lift, upper and/or lower eyelid surgery, lipofilling, or laser treatment. These combinations are always carefully evaluated based on the patient’s needs.

At our clinic, the patient is our priority; each treatment is tailored to meet the individual needs and desires of the patient.

Indications

A deep plane facelift and neck lift is effective for correcting:

  • Sagging cheeks and jawline
  • Deep nasolabial folds (between the nose and mouth)
  • Loss of volume in the midface
  • Sagging in the central face
  • Excess skin and wrinkles in the face and neck
  • Neck bands and reduced jawline definition

This procedure is designed to address a wide range of aging features, focusing on restoring balance, contour, and expression in the face.

A deep plane facelift goes beyond superficial rejuvenation: the underlying structures are restored, resulting in a long-lasting and natural outcome.

The ideal candidate for this procedure is in good physical and mental health and does not smoke. Smokers will only be operated on if they have completely stopped smoking at least six weeks before the procedure, as smoking significantly impedes healing and increases the risk of complications. Avoiding alcohol before and after the procedure is also important. If you are taking blood thinners, this must be discussed with the surgeon beforehand.

While most patients are over the age of 40, the procedure is not exclusively for older individuals. Younger candidates with early signs of volume loss or sagging can also benefit from it. The earlier the intervention in the aging process, the more significant and longer-lasting the results typically are. Generally, the optimal age group is between 45 and 58 years.

Eligibility is determined through a thorough evaluation of overall health, lifestyle, skin condition, and aesthetic goals. A personal consultation is essential to assess these factors carefully.

Precision Beneath the Surface, Beauty That Lasts

Recovery

The recovery process varies from patient to patient, but there are some common stages:

  • Immediately after the procedure, the face is wrapped to reduce swelling and support healing. The patient is monitored in the recovery room, after which they are typically allowed to go home the same day.
  • Swelling and bruising are normal, especially during the first two weeks. These gradually subside. Pain or discomfort may occur but is usually well-managed with pain medication.
  • The bandage is usually removed the day after the procedure or replaced with a soft support bandage. Sutures are removed in stages: the larger sutures after three days, the sutures in front of the ear after one week, and the ones behind the ear and under the chin after two weeks.
  • During the first weeks, physical rest is strongly recommended. Strenuous activities or bending should be avoided. Scars typically heal well, but proper post-operative care is crucial. Clear instructions will be provided for this.
  • Following the post-operative guidelines carefully is essential for a smooth recovery and optimal result.

Risks

Although the vast majority of patients recover without problems, as with any surgical procedure, there are some risks involved.

Possible complications include:

  • Temporary or, in rare cases, permanent damage to facial nerves
  • Infection or post-operative bleeding
  • Delayed wound healing or partial skin loss
  • Suboptimal scar formation despite the use of modern closure techniques

Through careful preparation, good medical follow-up, and open communication, these risks can be significantly minimized. Transparency and mutual understanding are key in this process.

A deep plane facelift not only restores appearance but also the confidence that comes with it. The combination of precision, technique, and an understanding of natural anatomy makes this method a powerful option for sustainable and harmonious rejuvenation.

Frequently asked questions

Is the procedure painful?

Most patients experience only mild swelling and sensitivity after the procedure. Pain is usually well controlled with light painkillers.

When can I resume social or professional activities?

Most patients feel comfortable enough to resume social activities or work after 10 to 14 days, depending on the nature of their job and personal healing progress.

Who will guide me before and after the procedure?

Joa, Dr. O. Beckers' personal assistant, will support you throughout the entire process. She is available for any questions, coordinates post-operative care, and also manages the lymphatic drainage sessions to optimize your recovery.

How does the recovery and aftercare process work after my facial procedure with Dr. O. Beckers?

All our facial procedures – whether it’s a deep plane facelift, deep plane necklift, or deep plane style minilift – are performed at Dr. O. Beckers' private clinic in Hasselt. Your entire aftercare will also take place at this location. Here, the sutures will be removed, RED light therapy will be applied, and lymphatic drainage will be performed to optimize your recovery.

Additionally, every patient receives a personal phone number, allowing you to contact us anytime, day or night, for any questions or concerns. This way, we guide you safely, professionally, and personally throughout the entire recovery process.

Does Dr. O. Beckers treat international patients?

Yes, Dr. O. Beckers also treats international patients. All our facial procedures are performed at the private clinic in Hasselt, Belgium, and we ensure that international patients receive the same professional guidance and aftercare as Belgian patients. This includes services such as suture removal, RED light therapy, lymphatic drainage, and personal support via a direct phone number for any questions, both before and after the procedure.

Is swelling normal after my procedure, and does it affect the final result?

Yes, swelling is a completely normal response after any facial procedure. The degree of swelling can vary between patients and depending on the type of procedure, but it gradually decreases over the weeks following the surgery. Swelling does not affect the final result; the ultimate outcome will only be fully visible once the swelling has completely subsided.

Is the overnight stay included in the price of the proposal, and how does it proceed?

Yes, for our facial rejuvenation procedures, one overnight stay is included in the price of the proposal. You will stay at our private clinic in Hasselt, where you will be continuously monitored by our night nurse. During the night, the entire focus will be on your comfort and recovery, with someone available at all times should you need assistance. The next morning, Dr. O. Beckers will visit you personally for the first care check, after which you can continue your recovery at home.

For our international patients, Joa will arrange accommodation at a nearby B&B close to the clinic. You will then return regularly for check-ups, RED light therapy, scar laser treatments, and skin advice.

I have a question, who can I contact?

You can contact us at any time via info@deepplanefacelift.be or by phone at +32 471 73 14 65.

Is an online consultation possible?

Yes, an online consultation is certainly possible. However, please note that Dr. O. Beckers must have seen you in person at least once before any procedure can be scheduled.

What additional procedures can be combined with a deep plane facelift?

For an optimal overall result, additional procedures can be performed, such as upper and lower eyelid surgery, brow lifts, lip lifts, and ablative laser resurfacing. These procedures respectively improve the contours of the eyes, forehead, lip shape, and skin quality. Combining these procedures with the deep plane facelift ensures a comprehensive approach, addressing both underlying anatomy and skin structure.

How is natural expression preserved during a deep plane facelift?

During the deep plane procedure, the underlying tissue is lifted as a whole, including the deep ligaments and fascia. Because the skin itself is not overly tightened, the musculature remains free to move. This ensures that facial expressions are preserved, and the result looks natural, without the "pulled" effect that can sometimes occur with traditional facelifts.

When can I resume my daily activities?

Light activities can generally be resumed after 1 to 2 weeks. However, more strenuous physical exertion, bending, or lifting should be avoided for the first 2 to 3 weeks to prevent swelling and bruising. Post-operative care, such as lymphatic drainage and RED Light Therapy, will help support a faster and more comfortable recovery.
