Introduction

A deep plane necklift, also known as a "weekend lift," with or without deep neck reduction, is an advanced surgical technique aimed at improving the neck contour and accentuating the jawline. This procedure is suitable for individuals showing signs of aging, as well as for patients with a naturally fuller neck or less defined jawline.

Unlike superficial techniques such as liposuction or simply tightening the skin, a deep plane necklift addresses deeper tissues. This results in a structurally sound, long-lasting, and natural-looking outcome.

Patients with genetically determined heaviness in the neck or an absent jawline definition are often ideal candidates. During the procedure, the skin, muscles, and other deeper structures are loosened and repositioned. In some cases, sagging glandular tissue on the side of the neck is also removed; this is referred to as deep neck reduction.

This technique not only offers aesthetic improvement at the surface level but also provides structural support for the neck and jawline, leading to more durable results than traditional methods.

Effects of a neck lift

As people age, the elasticity of the skin and underlying tissues diminishes. This leads to a loss of contour in the neck and along the jawline. In other cases, the lack of definition is genetically determined or a result of significant weight loss. A neck lift can yield the following results:

  • Correction of excess and sagging skin in the neck
  • Firming of the neck structure and improvement of the jawline
  • Restoration of the cervicomental angle (the angle between the chin and the neck)
  • Reduction of volume increase in the deep neck area
  • Long-lasting results due to correction in the deep layers of the tissue

Platysmaplasty

Platysmaplasty is an essential part of a deep plane necklift. In this procedure, the platysma muscle in the neck is trimmed, repositioned, and sometimes sutured together. This gives the neck a tighter, more defined shape and restores or creates a clear angle between the chin and neck. This technique is particularly effective for patients with visible vertical neck bands or the so-called "turkey neck" appearance.

Deep neck reduction

In certain cases, an excess of tissue in the deep layers of the neck can create a heavy or bulky appearance. This may be due to aging or a genetically determined composition. When classic lifting techniques are insufficient to achieve a defined neck contour, deep neck reduction may be considered.

In this technique, excess deep tissue—such as fat, muscle, or sagging salivary glands—is removed through a small incision beneath the chin. This helps restore or even create a sharper outline of the jawline and neck, especially if this definition was absent by nature.

Recovery

Recovery after a neck lift occurs in stages and depends on the technique used and the individual healing response of the patient. The most common aspects of recovery are as follows:

  • Immediately after the procedure, a support bandage is applied to limit swelling. After a brief observation period, the patient can go home.
  • Swelling and bruising are normal during the first two weeks and gradually subside.
  • There may be pain or discomfort, for which Dr. O. Beckers will prescribe appropriate medication.
  • The bandage is usually removed after one night or replaced with a supporting facial bandage.
  • Sutures are removed in stages: the larger ones after three days, the front ones after one week, and the sutures behind the ear and under the chin after two weeks.
  • Physical exertion and bending should be avoided during the first few weeks.
  • Scars usually heal well, but it is important to care for the scar tissue correctly. Clear guidance will be provided on this.
  • Following post-operative guidelines is crucial for smooth recovery and minimizing the risk of complications.

Risks

Although most patients recover without issues, like any surgical procedure, there are risks involved. Some possible complications include:

  • Temporary or (in rare cases) permanent damage to facial nerves, affecting facial expression
  • Bleeding or infection, despite the use of sterile techniques
  • Delayed wound healing, superficial skin discoloration, or—in exceptional cases—partial skin necrosis
  • Scarring that heals less favorably, despite careful closure techniques

Open communication with Dr. O. Beckers about your health, medication use, and any concerns is essential. This helps ensure a safe treatment and predictable outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Is the procedure painful?

Most patients experience only mild swelling and sensitivity after the procedure. Pain is usually well controlled with light painkillers.

What is a deep neck reduction?

This technique involves removing excess deep tissue, such as fat, muscle, or sagging salivary glands, through a small incision under the chin. This helps restore or even create a sharper contour of the jawline and neck, especially if it was naturally absent.

What are the indications for this procedure?

Patients with moderate to severe ptosis of the neck and jawline structures, often accompanied by an early "turkey neck" or loss of jawline definition, are ideal candidates. The procedure is less suitable for those with pronounced midface aging.

How does recovery after a deep plane necklift proceed, and who will guide me during this process?

After your deep plane necklift, you won’t be alone. Joa, Dr. O. Beckers' personal assistant, provides careful guidance to all patients before and after the procedure. She is easily accessible for any questions and ensures that you are fully informed and reassured throughout the recovery process. Additionally, she coordinates the necessary lymphatic drainage after the facelift to ensure optimal healing and help you see results faster.

When can I resume social or professional activities?

Most patients feel comfortable enough to resume social activities or work after 10 to 14 days, depending on the nature of their job and personal healing progress.

Who will guide me before and after the procedure?

Joa, Dr. O. Beckers' personal assistant, will support you throughout the entire process. She is available for any questions, coordinates post-operative care, and also manages the lymphatic drainage sessions to optimize your recovery.

All our facial procedures – whether it’s a deep plane facelift, deep plane necklift, or deep plane style minilift – are performed at Dr. O. Beckers' private clinic in Hasselt. Your entire aftercare will also take place at this location. Here, the sutures will be removed, RED light therapy will be applied, and lymphatic drainage will be performed to optimize your recovery.

Additionally, every patient receives a personal phone number, allowing you to contact us anytime, day or night, for any questions or concerns. This way, we guide you safely, professionally, and personally throughout the entire recovery process.

Does Dr. O. Beckers treat international patients?

Yes, Dr. O. Beckers also treats international patients. All our facial procedures are performed at the private clinic in Hasselt, Belgium, and we ensure that international patients receive the same professional guidance and aftercare as Belgian patients. This includes services such as suture removal, RED light therapy, lymphatic drainage, and personal support via a direct phone number for any questions, both before and after the procedure.

Is swelling normal after my procedure, and does it affect the final result?

Yes, swelling is a completely normal response after any facial procedure. The degree of swelling can vary between patients and depending on the type of procedure, but it gradually decreases over the weeks following the surgery. Swelling does not affect the final result; the ultimate outcome will only be fully visible once the swelling has completely subsided.

Is the overnight stay included in the price of the proposal, and how does it proceed?

Yes, for our facial rejuvenation procedures, one overnight stay is included in the price of the proposal. You will stay at our private clinic in Hasselt, where you will be continuously monitored by our night nurse. During the night, the entire focus will be on your comfort and recovery, with someone available at all times should you need assistance. The next morning, Dr. O. Beckers will visit you personally for the first care check, after which you can continue your recovery at home.

For our international patients, Joa will arrange accommodation at a nearby B&B close to the clinic. You will then return regularly for check-ups, RED light therapy, scar laser treatments, and skin advice.

I have a question, who can I contact?

You can contact us at any time via info@deepplanefacelift.be or by phone at +32 471 73 14 65.

Is an online consultation possible?

Yes, an online consultation is certainly possible. However, please note that Dr. O. Beckers must have seen you in person at least once before any procedure can be scheduled.

When can I resume my daily activities?

Light activities can generally be resumed after 1 to 2 weeks. However, more strenuous physical exertion, bending, or lifting should be avoided for the first 2 to 3 weeks to prevent swelling and bruising. Post-operative care, such as lymphatic drainage and RED Light Therapy, will help support a faster and more comfortable recovery.
